Arts, in its general sense, is an expression of oneself. There are many fields or areas in creative arts, such as acting, crafting, films, broadcasting, photography, visual arts, literary, architecture, and music. Therefore, is music a creative art?

In the early civilizations, the Egyptians were known for their works of architecture evidenced by the still standing Pyramids of Giza and the Great Sphynx.

Michelangelo is also famous for his artworks in sculpture and painting during renaissance times.

The Statue of David which he completed in 1504, was one of the most renowned artworks during renaissance. He is also known for his works in the ceiling of Sistine Chapel, which he completed in 1512.

Literary arts were also famous during this era, and William Shakespeare is the world’s greatest dramatist. He is known for Romeo and Juliet and Hamlet, among others.

In music, there are several composers during renaissance until the late medieval period. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven, Johann Strauss, Johann Pachelbel, among others, were famous in their own eras due to their extravagant work and compositions of music which until now, we may be able to hear its rhythms.

Is music a creative art?

So, is music a creative art? According to Cambridge Dictionary, creativity is the ability to produce or use original and unusual ideas, while Arts is the making, showing,  or performance of painting, acting, dancing, and music.

Thus, as this creative art is the production of original and unusual ideas in the field of performance, in which they help stimulate and cultivate a person’s imagination, music is, undoubtedly, a creative art.

What is music creativity?

Music creativity is a form of discipline, in a way, that it helps to stimulate one person’s creativity through or with the aid of melodic sound.

However, musical creativity, as an approach in educational field, means not restricting on how to teach composition.

What is more important is, in musical creativity, we integrate the music in every activity so as to develop one person’s understanding.

Nonetheless, it is undisputed that every person has his own perspective and way of integrating something to be creative.

Not everyone can jive creativity along with musical paraphernalia. Yet, as long as there are auditory learners, musical creativity will still be around and thriving.

There are people who can focus whilst hearing music. Some are passionate with lyrics. For others, just bare instrumentals will do.

The author, while composing this article is listening to classical music, the music during renaissance and medieval era. The works of Bach, Pomp, Strauss, Mozart and Beethoven helps me to stimulate ideas and to focus mainly on what am I doing.

Musical creativity is the simultaneous inclination with music while performing another task. Music can become a catalyst that enhances one’s creativity. It can be your channel of free flowing thoughts and ideas.

With this, one person becomes creative, especially those who are really musically inclined, or those who are motivated with the help of every breath and rhythm of such music he listens to.

While it is true, we are not born creative. Despite this, creativity, though not inborn to some people, it can be learned and improved.

As we are distinct from one another, some tends to listen to music to become creative and bring spark to their works.

The author does belong to this group of persons. Listening to music makes the author creative and focused.

Research shows that a person who listens to music can reduce his anxiety and stress, thereby, improving his mood. These improvements can boost one person’s creativity and ideas.

This is so because, while listening to music, it can relax our brain, and by relaxing, it can incubate more creative ideas and thoughts.

Moreover, when a person listens to a happy or enthusiastic music, it can increase his performance and thinking which only shows that it nurtures one person’s cognitive flexibility to come up and integrate with new and different perspective.

Creativity is important in music because listening thereto improves one’s mood and can help him be motivated. Thus, in order for a person to become productive with the help of music, such must be of one’s preference and created with creativity.

Creativity in music demands a better and deep understanding of several music theories. One’s has to imbibe himself with sound theories and the melodies that will suit a particular sound pattern.

Through deep knowledge of how music was created and how it works, this profound background will increase one’s appreciation for music. Because of this, it will improve one’s motivation in learning music and its attributes.

Every person can compose and sing a song, but as what the author has said, not everyone has the capacity of composing great music. But with creativity, everyone may be able to create a good one, as long as he has the passion and eagerness to learn on how to compose a creative music work.

Not everybody can teach music. There are persons who are gifted and musically inclined and they share their own experience with some others.

There are also persons who enroll themselves in a music degree in college and utilize the said degree either to professionally compose and play or to teach the art of music.

But we start with teaching music in a very basic way and without complications. Every musically inclined person does not need to have a degree to share their knowledge to others, especially on how to play some instruments like guitar or piano.

Nevertheless, there are instances that you have to be trained professionally by musicians, especially in voice lessons, as there are techniques in singing which can be handled by professionals.

We must relax ourselves. We have to bear in mind to be calm and be mindful as those are simple means to being creative. Create a good connection between your student as this could create a healthy relationship between the two of you.

With this harmonious relationship, you can build a good sounding harmony of music. Encourage your student to also learn from his own, by feeling and hearing the sound and harmony he makes with impromptu instrumental play.

During the early times when there were no social media platforms, people entertain themselves by jiving with classical music in ballrooms or they were contented watching orchestral play in theaters.

This has been their form of keeping themselves entertained. Therefore, entertainment can help one person improve his mood.

According to research, music helps reduce one person’s anxiety, stress, as well as blood pressure and discomfort. It also helps enhance one’s quality of sleep, improve his mood, mental activity, and alertness, and even music.

Also, listening to music improve one’s memory and cognition and provides relaxation, depending on what kind of sound they are inclined to listen to make them at peace.

If a person listen to music with fast tempo and beat can help him stimulate his energy, it increases one’s heart rate, while if one listens to slow-tempo music, it has the opposite effect which can make him calm.

Similarly, research shows that, when a person listens to a music he likes, the brain releases a chemical called dopamine, which has a positive effect in our mood.

It, thus, can help us feel certain emotions depending on what music we listen to. This reveals that listening to music may somehow improve our mental and physical health and well-being.

What is the relationship between music and art?

Music and art are intertwined and influence by one another. Music itself is a form of art. However, music has a different relationship with some form of arts, such as visual arts.

In visual arts, particularly painting, the environment which is filled with music affects one’s creativity. There are artists and musicians who agree that music and arts are intertwined.

There is a Russian artist named Wassily Wassilyevich Kandinsky, who is so fascinated with this relationship between arts and music that he has named some of his paintings based on musical terms.

There are artists who interpret themselves by painting and by looking at their masterpiece, you can feel their emotion.

When you look and feel a painting, you see not only its face but also its spirit as every art pieces have their deep meaning and some, a hidden feeling. Music can really affect one’s mood and this mood may affect an artist’s masterpiece.

In other words, if said artist listens to a particular musical genre while painting, the same will reflect to his work.

What kind of music inspire creativity?

Research shows that classical musical is the most listened to when it comes to affect one’s creativity. Why is that so? Classical music is engaging and relaxing.

In spite of this, as the author said a while ago, every person has different perspective in all aspects of life, thus subjective.

In music, some tend to listen to hard rock to boost their creativity, while others listen to mellow and country songs to stimulate their cognition.

It is undisputed that there are studies tending to show the result on which genre can help inspire creativity.

One may tend to listen to the natural sound produced by our planet, such as the water flows, the sea waves touching the shore, the sound of birds in a canopy, and even the whoosh of the wind and these natural sounds can improve one’s concentration. It can help bring a positive impact because of its less distracting characteristic.

One may tend to listen to instrumental music, as they find the lyrics to be so distracting especially when one has a task to memorize or an output to be completed. Thus, with this minimalist approach of music, a person can be calm and relaxed.

But the most important is, you listen depending on the music you most enjoy when you listen to. Research shows that people who listen to their favorite musical hits perform better in their task.
